The Mascara Monologues

|

As editors at a beauty magazine we are regularly bombarded with press releases, phone calls and samples of every new product on the market. In order to be responsible editors we feel the need to test these products before writing about them. Due to this commitment, I can honestly say that my body has become a walking laboratory. At any given time you’ll find me with at least three new products on my person – from cellulite cream to lip gloss to shaving gel.

My most recent experiment focused on something all red-blooded women seek: the perfect mascara. (Note: I have not tried any of the new vibrating mascaras that Stephanie Quadri blogged about last week but they sound very cool!) Over the last few months I applied different brands of mascara to each eye and asked my panel of oh-so-savvy co-workers which looked best. (Keep in mind that I like my lashes long and separated so this test was based on that result.) Interestingly enough, the two top contenders are at vastly different price points. The winners for length and definition are Chanel Inimitable (available at Nordstrom, Neiman’s, Dillard’s) and Wet and Wild Mega Lash (CVS). I was actually surprised at how many good mascaras there really are out there. Since we are all unique and have different lashes, some of the runners-up may actually work better for you. Here they are in no particular order: Guerlain’s Le2 de Guerlain mascara (Nordstrom, Neiman’s), Prescriptives Here To Stay 24-Hour Longwear mascara (Nordstrom, Neiman’s, Dillard’s, Macy’s), Stila MAJOR major lash (Sephora), TIGI Eyes Love It! (Toni&Guy salons) and for those of you who want a more dramatic look, DiorShow is always a winner (Nordstrom, Neiman’s). This is by no means a complete list. I have not tried every mascara out there (although I would love to) but it’s a good start. If you have any that you love be sure to let us know!
