The Laws of Attraction: How To Lure Hummingbirds Into The Dallas Garden

To my surprise, this Bleeding Heart I picked up at Home Depot on sale in early spring brought hummingbirds in April to my garden. Photography by Christine Allison

Attracting hummingbirds to the garden is easy in Dallas with just a few simple plantings. I scored this Clerodendrum (Bleeding Heart) at Home Depot in early spring and even though the Christmas colors sort of bother me, the hummingbirds love it. The earlier you have red blooms the sooner you’ll have H-birds in your midst. Generally speaking, we get our first hummingbirds in North Texas in mid-April (again, depending on what temptations you have provided in the garden). Coral honeysuckle blooms earlier, but Turk’s cap, purple hyacinth bean, and even orange lantana create a nice summer draw.
