What to Drink Now: Father’s Day

Just a week away from Dad’s big day and if you are looking for the perfect gift for scotch or bourbon loving dad here are some great ideas that are sure to please any dad on his special day.

The Macallan Single Malt Scotch– any year is sure to please Dad, but my favorite is The Macallan 18 Sherry Cask aged, even over some of the older like the 25 or 30.  The 18 really gives a great balance of caramel, vanilla and nutty notes blended with orange flower and a hint of citrus with a thin layer of sweet baking spice like nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon.  Though it is rich with the oak of the wood coming through it is still vibrant.  Delicious served neat or with a single ice cube.

I had the chance to grab a sip of the 20 Year Sherry oak aged Masters of Photography Macallan that was served at the Dallas Film Festival earlier this spring.  WOW….super nutty and toasty with cocoa and caramel.  Only 1000 bottles of this special Macallan were made, which was auctioned off for an impressive $6000 bid.  Only 200 bottles are available in the US and dad will love you for it.

Highland Park 18 Year Old Sctoch is a great alternate for Macallan if you are looking to save a few pennies.  Not as refined as Macallan, but it has earned the Best Spirit in the World award, twice.  Filled with almond, toffee and honey with a lingering smoky finish.  This is a great everyday scotch.

Glenmorangie Signet is for the scotch lover who wants something big, bold and hearty.  Created by blending the oldest whisky at Glenmorangie, distilling for 30 years and aged in American white oak casks.  Dense coffee and cocoa flavors from the roasted barley with hints of citrus and candied orange peel.

If Dad is a peated scotch fan tryLaphroaig 10 year or 18 year from Islay.  The 10 year will have a fresher, livelier profile with lots of smoky peat and citrus notes.  The 18 will bring in a nutty richness to the smoked peat with concentrated flavors, balance and a long finish.

Russell’s Reserve, the  father and son created, small batch 10 year aged bourbon with lots of spice, pepper and nutty aromas, has partnered with Operation Once in a Lifetime (OOIAL), a non-profit organization that provides resources to U.S. Service members.  Throughout June a donation will be made to OOIAL for every bottle sold, mainly to help provide flights to bring service men and women home, as the best gift is to be with your loved ones on Father’s Day.

Maker’s Mark 46 Bourbon is created by taking toasted French oak staves and inserting them into fully matured Maker’s Mark Bourbon and then aged for another 2-3 months adding depth  and spiciness to the traditional Maker’s Mark.  Filled with nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves with vanilla and toasted oak on the finish.

If you want Dad to chose his favorite scotch on Father’s Day make reservations at The Second Floor in The Westin Galleria.  All of the drams of scotch on their extensive list will be half price on Father’s Day.

All products are available at various Goody-Goody locations around town.
